What is Transitional Living?

March 14th, 2008 . by Holland

Youth Bridge’s Transitional Living Program (TLP) is designed for young adults who are homeless, couch surfing, or don’t have a safe place to stay. We have two programs currently, the Fayetteville Junior Civic League Transitional Living Program and the Copper Creek Transitional Living Program. Clients might not be eligible for state youth programs, but need personal and financial assistance to become successful, independent adults. Accepted clients must have the goal of becoming responsible, self-sufficient and productive members of society.

Young adults between the ages of 16 and 22 can apply. Clients with children will also be considered. Youth Bridge helps individuals who have no support system or means by which to support themselves. All prospective clients must complete a comprehensive application and interview process, including mandatory drug tests.

TLP is not a homeless shelter, but a treatment facility where homeless or couch surfing young adults receive training to become self-sufficient, educated and employed.

Clients can receive assistance and training in the following areas, depending on need and eligibility:

  • Money management and consumer awareness
  • Counseling services
  • Food Management and housekeeping
  • Job interviews and employment attainment
  • Transportation
  • Accessing community resources
  • Education or vocational training, GED completion, college application and courses
  • Substance Abuse Education
  • Interpersonal Skills
  • Emergency and personal safety skills
  • Legal assistance
  • Parenting classes
  • Obtaining permanent housing

Applications are available on our Transitional Living Program page.

After getting accepted into the transitional living program (TLP), clients are placed in either a group home or an individual apartment. Clients work together with our residential specialists to set goals for employment, education and personal development. Each client monitored to ensure success, but clients are very active in determining their own goals and fulfilling their objectives.

QUICK FACTS ABOUT TLP

Intake interviews will be conducted for each client. They determine eligibility, needs, services, education and health care needs, among other things.

Rules are standardized, but individualized for each client

Progress is charted based on a individualized master service plan- we don’t expect the same progress for each client.

For TLP HUD, clients can’t be in the state’s custody and have to meet the definition of HUD’s homelessness.
